ORIENTALIST PAINTINGS & SCULPTURES
Since 2009, the Orientalist Paintings and Sculptures department has presented specialist sales featuring the great names of masters such as Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Roubztoff.
Millon is the only auction house to offer specialist sales of Orientalist paintings and sculptures, a movement that emerged in the 19th century as Westerners discovered the Orient in the wake of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.
Orientalist auction calendar
Organised by a team of women, the Orientalismes auctions bring together art lovers and collectors several times a year, in the auction room or live, around a catalogue of selected works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Under the direction of experts Anne-Sophie Joncoux Pilorget and Cécile Ritzenthaler, paintings and sculptures from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Turkey and Persia are estimated and appraised.
Two auction formats are proposed, to attract collectors and amateurs. These two formats are designed to attract collectors and connoisseurs alike, and to showcase the works and artists in the best possible light.
- Orientalist Paintings" auctions feature a smaller selection of high-quality works by famous names from the Masters of Orientalism. The works are listed in a paper catalogue.
- Tableaux d'Orient de 1830 à nos jours" auctions are held live and online. They feature works at affordable estimates for both experienced and budding collectors.
Whatever the format of the sale, all the works are presented directly online. Each work is the subject of a description, an appraisal and an estimate, as well as a photo session.
These "Orientalist" sales are part of our wider cycle of Oriental Art and Contemporary Arab Art, designed to appeal to a broader international clientele.
A recognised sales department and leader in its sector.
On the strength of stable results and renewed confidence on the part of buyers and sellers, the Orientalism department is the market leader in the sale of Orientalist paintings in Europe.
Each painting or sculpture is analysed, appraised, estimated and certified by the department's experts and specialists, accompanied by our auctioneers and supported by committees and artists' beneficiaries
Some of your works also require in-depth research into the artists' archives. This was the case for some previously unpublished oils by Alexandre Roubtzoff.
This work on your works enables the department specialising in Orientalist and Oriental Art auctions to achieve record prices. This is the case, for example, for a work by Roger Bezombes, Femmes à Alger - Hommage à Delacroix.
The auctions feature works by the great Orientalist masters as well as lesser-known artists: Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ludwig Deutsch, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Osman Hamdi Bey, Frederick Arthur Bridgman, Eugène Fromentin, Gustave Achille Guillaumet, Etienne Dinet, Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant, Alexandre Roubtzoff, Jacques Majorelle and Edwin Lord Weeks, to name but a few.
